Music and Movies

We signed up for Netflix last week and got our first Netflix movie in the mail: The Lovely Bones. I am not yet sure how I feel about the movie. It's very long, very well filmed and has an interesting concept but they pretty much tell you what happens at the beginning of the movie. It's even in the preview so that takes something away from it, in my opinion but it was a good movie to watch. I wouldn't want to own it. I probably will never watch it again. Kind of like Avatar. But it's worth renting and watching.

Toy Story 2 was down right cute! The Bugs loved it and I'm glad I bought it. I am excited for Toy Story 3 to come out and may be we could go see it at the drive-in if they have it. Or the Gem, I know they will have it. It's a good sequel for once. Most Disney sequels never hold up to the original but Toy Story 2 was impressive.

The Road came out on DVD today. I was kind of upset to find that Walmart did not have it on Blu-ray. But I bought the regular copy of it. I didn't feel like searching through stores to which ones had it. I have Thursday, Friday and Saturday off this week, I also don't work until 5pm on Sunday, then I have Monday off so I am hoping to be able to watch it then. The book was good. There were no chapters, no major places where you could stop in the book and the ending left me baffled and seriously wanting more information. I am hoping maybe the movie will give me a little more information. Don't get me wrong, the book was great. The absence of chapters forced me to read it pretty much all at one time but that's probably the major reason I was left wanting more. It's not a long book by any means and definitely worth the read if nothing else but to enlighten you on what could be the future. It's well written. And hopefully this movie-- chalk full of stars like Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, and Robert Duvall will live up to the book. We will see.

I did get myself also a Zune download card to download some songs for me and the girls. Right now we're into Michael Buble-- I Just Haven't Met You Yet, Huey Lewis and the News--- It's all right, Maxi Priest featuring Shaggy--- That Girl and quite a few others. They love those songs and dance around with me for exercise. So to surprised them, we won't have to wait for them to come on XM radio anymore. I'll have it for them on my Zune. Music = happiness in this household. I have always been that way I suppose and I do miss the awesome songs and bands from the 90's. I am happy to see some of the crank out more tunes again like Tonic, their release me song is just awesome. So nice to have some of them back. Even Linkin Park put out a new one that I like very much and would sit in my car in the driveway just to listen to whatever is left.

Aside from that we have visits!! My mom *possibly* this week depending on how she is feeling. She hasn't been feeling well lately and that always worries me. I was hoping she would bring my niece with her but she's been back and forth to Duke Medical hospital. She's going to be 9 and if they can't get her epilepsy to stop soon(she's had it since 6 months of age) then they'll know that she won't ever grow out of it. That deeply saddens me for her. It's her entire future. She may not be able to drive, have children and I wish I was closer so I could be there for her. Duke is even almost 2 hours from them. Longer from me but they have a great children hospital there. It just breaks my heart. She's such a sweetie and she's dealt with this and hasn't had a normal childhood because of the worry of seizures. I am praying that she'll grow out of it. I still have hope. I know she can't make it this week but at least I'll get to see her next month and maybe we'll get to go to her birthday party in July.

Another visit we have the first week of June is Ant CiCi!!! And she's definitely coming, the bugs have been asking about her lately since they have not seen her since December. They've talked to her on the phone and soon it will be time to tell them that their Ant CiCi is coming over for a slumber party. I am excited too! I have missed her. We talk on the phone a lot at night. She even waits for me to get off work which isn't until 1:30 am and sometimes we end up talking until the wee hours of the morning, and then we text each other the next day about how cranky we are. We're a funny pair. But we've been friends since 4th grade, so it's expected. Her birthday is at the end of this month so I am looking forward to spending yet another year together even if it is on the phone with sporadic visits.

Thursday is the Bugs graduation and boy do I have some cute pictures for Wordless Wednesday! Check them out tomorrow!

Wow, have I really not been here since Wednesday?

For some reason, it seemed like I was away longer than that. Of course, I've been busy. The Bugs preschool year is coming to a close. 4 more days left for bug. 2 more days left for bee. With working third shift hours, being off on Friday is an advantage for me. I go to sleep sometimes even before 8pm and sleep all night! Last night is my case in point! Now I am up super early and trying to plan my day. Redmosqui, when asked says he just wants to relax. We live near Lowes Motor Speedway and well, it's that time of year again--- Race week. The stopper of all traffic. Getting anywhere takes forever. Eating out takes forever and anything that involves getting anywhere takes forever. Thank goodness I have a house because all hotels are booked to No Vacancy. I think it doubles the population here.

Generally during race week, we try to go the opposite direction. Last night, we had dinner at Red Burrito. My husband had never eaten there and said that it gave him a little taste of being back home. The tacos there apparently did anyway. And well for me, it was just the opposite way the traffic was going. I've eaten there before and know it's delicious.... Anywho, This morning, my husband brought to my attention that a new drive-in theatre opened up in the Charlotte area. Not the direction I want to go in but it made me think about the one I have been to here. It's very cheap, children under 6 get in free. It's $5 per adult. There is wifi access. And Shrek is playing. Tough decision. It's in the WRONG direction and would probably take forever to get there. Looks like I may have to wait until next week.

The reason though, that this is getting blogged about today is because I am sure most areas have these. You just need to research a little bit. They also have older theatres. We have the Gem theatre which opened up originally in 1936, and in 1942 suffered a fire. It was then rebuilt in 1948 and has been standing ever since. I am very big on history (I have a BA in history) and sometimes I really do think I belong in the wrong time. While I love technology, been in the blogging community since the early 2000's..... I do enjoy the more simple things like picking our own fruits, and veggies, open markets, farmers markets. I also enjoy days where we don't have the TV on for a single minute. It happens a time or two during the week and it's so nice. It's hard to believe how things have changed in the last 50 years even. I haven't been to the drive-in for over 7 years, to the Gem for over 5. Time to get back to it.... they are amazingly priced. Almost like going back in time. You can't beat 2 movies at the drive-in, $5-$7 per adult, kids under 6 free, free wifi and it includes 2 new release movies. Not when the average price for 1 adult, 1 new release movie is $10. Right now, I am itching to see the new Robin Hood movie. And Shrek and Iron Man are currently playing there right now. It might be fun... but alas, it looks like race week may put an end to that theory. We could always go see Shrek at the Gem. It's playing there tonight.

So summation: Find some of the past times that are in the present today. They're fun, easy on the wallet and will amaze the kids and you just the same. Perhaps I may even bring my netbook and get some things done when we eventually do go. Hmmm, on second thought, they did not have netbooks (or wifi, with the original drive ins. Let's leave it at home)

Happy Weekend!

Movies..

Since Sunday is one of my days off, Redmosqui and I decided to watch Avatar. I wouldn't call it an amazing movie. It was good. The concept isn't new obviously, but the graphics were amazing. That's really the most interesting part that I enjoyed during the movie. When told that there maybe a sequel, I am kind of indifferent to whether or not there should be one. For me, the movie is over. I know enough. And any sequel would just be the same thing happening again. I even think I probably shouldn't have bought it. I should've rented it. The chances of me watching it again are slim to none unless one of my guests wants to spend almost an entire afternoon watching the movie with us.

We also took Bug and Bee to Xtreme play which is one of those places with the inflatable bounce houses. They bounced their hearts out. We've joined Bob Evan's birthday club so they sent Bug a free kids meal coupon for her birthday so we finally got out there. Then we went to Walmart to get doggie food for the "Coo Coo Puppy" (what the girls are calling the dog now). The girls seem to know all the movies we have and don't have. While at Walmart today, they pointed out that they don't have Toy Story 2 since it just came out recently. I almost wanted to pick it up for them but we joined a club almost 2 years ago. You know, one of those "Oh you'll get these movies at this discounted price if you'll buy 5 movies are regular price over 24 months." But we've discovered that the club more than makes up the value of the discounts they give you on the movies since each additional movie is at least $20 (depends on if you have Blu Ray too). Then there is shipping. Needless to say, I am ordering Toy Story 2 to fullfill my obligation of 5 movies in 24 months early. Then I'll use the VIP membership to my advantage for Christmas presents until my contract is over and will never sign up again. My biggest pet peeve is the customer service. It was horrible. They made a mistake, charged my credit card (they don't accept debit card) twice last year for one movie. So I called, and I was nice about it. I told them just send me another movie. (I blogged about it last year so I won't go into full detail.) So they said ok. Well, they charged my credit card again. So, I am charged for one more movie that I should not have been charged for. Thank goodness they don't accept debit. That could really play with bank accounts. Anyway, December I ordered G-Force 2. It was supposed to get here by Bee's birthday. Never came. So I called almost February and they said someone deleted my card that was on file. The whole time I was checking my order status, it said "Processing." Hello? My phone number is in the system, they confirm it everytime we call. Don't let it process for over 2 months without even calling or randomly canceling it. So I cancelled it. We ended up renting it anyway. Don't really care to own it. We ordered Princess and the Frog instead. You even have to argue with them to take one off of your commitment agreement, even when it's their mistake. Another pet peeve I have is that I want to be able to see the movie with the girls when it comes out. Princess and the Frog came out a month before it was set as the featured title or even for order on the movie club. Not only could I have bought it for the discounted price that first week it's out, but I wouldn't have to wait for it either. They say allow 10 days for shipping, it took a lot longer than that and there were no holidays in March to delay postage. A lesson learned I suppose. Anyway, that's what I am doing tonight. I am ordering my last over priced movie and getting it done. I suppose I will still have to respond to the featured title maillings until October but at least that's not too much longer. I dealt with it almost 2 years now. I will always support the company itself and always enjoy the movies. In fact most of the dvd's the bugs watch, I had before they were born. So I've been a collector as far back as I can remember. Even have the musical CD's at my moms house. Those songs and movies got me through tough times when I broke my foot so I won't let one bad experience ruin it for me. It's just sad that I am expecting something to happen with my Toy Story order since it would be par for the course. But anyway.... Movies. :)

We had a great movie week here at our House. Wednesday we watched Chicken Little and Enchanted. Thursday, we watched Lion King. Friday we watched Aristocats and Cinderella 2. We watched a few others too but it was fun. The girls have a separate DVD folder for their movies and they know how to get the DVD player going. At least Bug does. We put popcorn in brown paper lunch bags for them. Somehow, that's cleaner and makes them feel like we're at the movies. We did play dress up and had a little photoshoot afterward on Friday. (Saving them for Wordless Wednesday post) As hectic-busy-trying, etc that our life is... we still have time to enjoy simple things like watching the girls bounce themselves silly or cuddling with movies on. It's been a nice week on top of it all. Hopefully next week we'll be able to watch Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Lady and the Tramp. :)

While at Walmart, we also bought the Ninja blender. We have been making smoothies a lot lately and our blender was starting to go. The girls are also obssessed with having their smoothies. We picked up a ton of fresh and frozen fruit. I wish we got them at the Farmers Market but eh.... Fruit is fruit. We have been going more often since it's warmed up but we can cheat once and a while, right? ;)

Smoothie recipe:

Couple little pours of Acai berry Juice
Orange Juice
Blackberry Pomogranate yogurt (Light Yoplait one is tasty, or use Vanilla Soy milk for lactose free)
Then toss in some berries --- strawberries, blueberries, blackberries.
Add a banana.
Blend until drinkable and if you want to get fancy toss in some frozen fruit pieces instead of ice.

Just a little warning about the Acai Juice. First off... it's expensive. Almost $7 for juice. Yup, I said SEVEN. And be sure to taste it before drinking it. I am fine with it in Smoothies but I can smell it when it's in there. I don't even have to see it poured in to know it's in there. So, make sure you like it first. Unlike me. At least if you do use it, the benefits of having it in there far outweigh the taste sensitivity.
I hope everyone had a great weekend!
